Bolton gets cold before the rest of Greater Manchester

The northern edge of the borough, Bromley Cross, Egerton, Belmont and Harwood, sits well above the Manchester basin and holds frost far longer. Every winter we see a run of Bolton callouts that all turn out to be the same thing: a frozen condensate pipe on a combi, usually where the pipe has been run externally down a north-facing wall. The boiler locks out with a fault code and looks dead. Thawing the pipe and lagging it properly is the fix, and it is not a new boiler.

Stone terraces with external pipe runs. Horwich and Blackrod have a lot of solid stone property where pipework was chased into or run along thick external walls. These freeze and split, and the leak often appears a long way from the actual break.

The town centre, Astley Bridge and Halliwell are reached from the A666 and A58. Horwich, Blackrod and Westhoughton come off junctions 5 and 6 of the M61. What to check before calling

In cold weather, look for a plastic pipe running out of the wall near the boiler. If it is frozen, that is very likely your fault. Also check the pressure gauge and confirm the boiler still has power at the fused spur.
